South Carolina Fair
Share Education Fund
mission is to advance the health safety and well-being of all South
Carolinians by educating them about issues affecting them as consumers and
citizens and ways to address those issues. SCFS Education Fund conducts
programs of research and education on critical policy issues facing South
Carolina ’s Citizens and produces tools for South Carolinians to help
frame those policy choices.

for Consumers
POLICY FORUMS
Are monthly policy discussion designed for the purpose of educating
community leaders, policy makers, and the public about policy issues. This
series of forums features knowledgeable experts from the public and
private sector. Those experts come from all sides of a policy debate.
Our goals are: 1) to give the public an opportunity to be involved in
evaluating the impact of policy initiatives on the community and 2) to
encourage advocacy around these initiatives.
Forums have addressed issues such as Sales Tax on Food, Hospital
Conversions, Community Economic Development, Hope VI Housing Development,
Predatory Lending, Child Care, Rental Housing, Immigration, Land Use
Planning/Urban Growth and the Federal Patient’s Bill of Rights.
Forums have been co-sponsored by many groups including, the USC College of
Social Work through the I. DeQuincey Newman Chair, Benedict College
Department of Social Work, S.C. Appleseed Legal Justice Center; S.C.
Institute on Poverty & Deprivation; Lutheran Family Services of the
Carolinas; S.C. Christian Action Council; Fannie Mae; Alliance for S.C.=s
Children, United Way of South Carolina and the National Black Family
Summit.

MARGINS OF HEALTH
A bi annual newsletter that keeps South Carolina
consumers
informed about the development and changes in the status of citizen health
in the state.

POLICY PERSPECTIVES
Is a detailed publication to explore more fully important policy issues
facing everyday South Carolinians. The Perspectives provide a better
explanation of the roots of problems and creative approaches to solving
them. These Policy Perspectives cover a wide variety of consumer
and family issues that occupy our advocacy work. Invitations are open for
the community to assist us in preparing Policy Perspectives. SC
Fair Share Education Fund invites other organizations and persons who are
working to better South Carolina
to join us in
producing future Policy Perspectives.

PUBLICATIONS
Nonprofits 101
A manual for board and staffs of new and smaller nonprofits It is a
practical guide to staying in compliance with state and federal laws
including board of directors structure, accountability and program
planning and evaluation. It is manual that covers incorporation,
registration and 501 (c)(3) status application for South Carolina
nonprofit organizations. Great tool for staff and board members of nonprofit organizations to applying the South
Carolina Nonprofit Corporations Act of 1994, how to protect your
organization and keep in compliance. (Cost: $75.00)

TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING
SCFS Education
Fund provides training and technical assistance to community groups and
organizations that are working to advance the health, safety, and
well-being of their communities through programs that have purposes to
relieve the poor and distressed or the underprivileged, the defense of
human and civil rights, the elimination of prejudice and discrimination,
the combating of neighborhood deterioration and threats to the
environment. The Education Fund looks especially to provide these services
to organizations that cannot afford to purchase them from commercial
entities. A special focus of our work is in low and moderate-income
communities. This training and technical assistance is designed to improve
and develop the capability of staff and boards of community organizations
in areas of leadership skills, financial management, fundraising, research
techniques, policy/legislative advocacy, community organizing, lobbying
and grassroots lobbying, board and organizational development.
