Welcome

For almost 25 years, South Carolina Fair Share (SCFS) and its sister organization, the South Carolina Education Fund, worked to advance the health, safety, and well-being of everyday people in the Palmetto State.  We played an important role in building a better future for everyday South Carolinians…from our early efforts helping to outlaw marital rape, to putting important protections into our state’s “welfare reform” law in mid-1990s, to rewriting laws on small loans, to advising on credit insurance, to stopping predatory mortgage lending and payday lending, to helping build the coalition that passed the cigarette tax increase and taking a strong lead in framing the current debates around health care reform and its implementation and the need for new resources for state government. At the same time, Fair Share became a critical resource of both skills training on social change and of information and research. For over 25 years, South Carolina’s progressive activists have looked forward to the weekly Legislative Update that told them not only what was going to happen, but why...and made you laugh, too.

After these many years of certainly some struggles, but ultimately a lot of successes, we will be closing our doors this summer (Summer 2011).  Although we as an organization will no longer be around, the needs that we helped address and the assets we highlighted are still very much present.  Therefore, we wanted to leave you with this site full of resources so that you can continue to help in building a better future for all in SC.

Although you might want to make changes within our state government on behalf of you, your family, or your community, you may not always take action to do so.  At SC Fair Share, we understand that a big reason for this is simply that you may not understand how to be an advocate.
